Lessons from my time at Covenant University

by T.M Kayode

A few days ago, I found myself waking up with the anthem of Covenant University on my lips. I had decided to write about some of my lessons during my time at Covenant. These lessons have not lost relevance in my life. In fact, I beg to say that those lessons actually frame the context within which I function.

The Covenant anthem is a call to arms,  a prophecy – if you will,  reciting the anthem again recharged me, refueled me and reminded me of the vision I am birthed into. These words I believe are meant to soak each student into a new birthright. A vision by Dr. David Oyedepo for the youth.

Before I give my lessons, let me share the lyrics of the anthem.

Powerful, isn’t it?

Now the Lessons:

Time Management

In Covenant University, the significance of time management is evident from the moment you set foot on campus. Unlike the notion of “African time”, where events frequently start late, Covenant operates on a strict schedule where punctuality reigns supreme. Each event is timed, with students expected to be seated 15 minutes before its commencement. Initially, this emphasis on punctuality and the repercussions of tardiness may unsettle new students. Questions about the severity of penalties for failing to adhere to strict timekeeping standards may arise.

However, as one delves deeper into the Covenant ethos, the rationale behind this emphasis becomes clear. In the “world of work”, there’s no leeway for “African time.” Tardiness is not merely an inconvenience but a manifestation of disrespect for both individuals and processes. Covenant University acknowledges this reality, instilling in its students the importance of valuing time as a precious commodity.

The commitment to strict timekeeping serves not merely as a disciplinary measure but as a crucible for nurturing a mindset of respect, responsibility, and efficiency.

Most Covenant University graduates seamlessly integrate this ethos into their daily routines, effortlessly embodying punctuality.

For me, It’s puzzling to observe the struggle of individuals who have been trained outside the Covenant community to prioritize punctuality and honor commitments. The simplicity of establishing a morning routine to ensure timely arrival at appointments appears to be a challenge for many, underscoring the profound disparity between the Covenant ethos and prevailing societal norms.

Fearlessness

Consider the typical Covenant University graduate: forged through four to five years of undergraduate study, sculpted by the rules and norms of Covenant. They have not merely survived but thrived within this environment, emerging as a graduate imbued with a profound sense of fearlessness. Throughout their journey, they have been nourished with positive teachings, encouraged to embrace the power bestowed upon them by God.

Now, as they stand on the threshold of a new chapter, they are equipped with the confidence to conquer any challenge that comes their way.

But what is there to fear for such an individual? Having embraced their God-given potential, they are emboldened to confront adversity head-on. The trials and triumphs experienced within the confines of Covenant have honed their resilience, instilling in them a steadfast determination to overcome obstacles. They understand that fear is but a fleeting illusion, a barrier to be dismantled in the pursuit of greatness.

Armed with the knowledge that they have been equipped with the tools necessary for success, Covenant University graduates approach life with a boldness that sets them apart. They are not shackled by fear of failure or uncertainty but rather propelled forward by an unwavering faith in their abilities. With each step they take, they radiate a sense of fearlessness that inspires those around them to embrace their own potential.

In the eyes of a Covenant University graduate, there is no challenge too daunting, no dream too audacious. For they have been shaped by an institution that fosters a culture of fearlessness, empowering them to embrace their destiny as architects of change.

God’s own arrow shot for Glory.

Possibility Mentality

Continuing in the vein of fearlessness, let’s explore the concept of Possibility Mentality – one of the Core Values of Covenant, ingrained in Covenant University graduates. A Covenant Student will sit through Total Man Concept (TMC); a unique course offered at Covenant, for four or five years. Having gone through this, we emerge with a profound understanding: impossibility does not exist; every aspiration, no matter how high, is within reach.

This mindset goes beyond mere self-assurance; it is rooted in an unwavering faith in God and the recognition of one’s divine heritage. Many Covenant University students understand themselves to be children of God, imbued with limitless potential.

The campus itself becomes a testament to this mentality, where achievements that might take others decades to realize materialize within months. It’s not uncommon to witness groundbreaking initiatives, innovative projects, and transformative endeavors flourishing within the vibrant ecosystem of Covenant University.

In the eyes of a Covenant University graduate, the world is brimming with endless possibilities waiting to be realized. Armed with a potent combination of faith, determination, and a deep-seated belief in their own potential, they stand poised to leave an indelible mark on the world.

Understanding that there are Times and Seasons

Despite being steeped in a culture that champions possibility mentality, Covenant University graduates possess a profound understanding of the concept of times and seasons.

In a world where instant gratification often reigns supreme, Covenant University instills in its students the wisdom that before the unveiling of destiny, there is a season of preparation. This recognition underscores the importance of patience with processes, acknowledging that every journey has its own timing.

The training received at Covenant goes beyond just envisioning grand dreams; it emphasizes the significance of diligent preparation. Students are taught to discern the rhythms of life, recognizing that there are moments of sowing, nurturing, and eventually reaping.

Rather than being bothered by the waiting period and  consumed by impatience, Covenant University graduates approach it with a sense of purpose and resolve. They understand that during these preparatory stages, they are honing their skills, refining their character, and fortifying their foundations for the future.

In essence, the understanding of times and seasons imbues Covenant University graduates with a sense of perspective, guiding them through the ebb and flow of life’s journey with grace and wisdom.

As I conclude these reflections, it’s evident that the principles discussed are not the exclusive preserve of Covenant University students. They are universal truths that can be embraced and applied by anyone willing to embark on the journey of personal growth and self-discovery. While Covenant may provide a fertile ground for the cultivation of these principles, the path to embodying them requires personal effort and dedication.

It’s worth noting that I have met individuals from diverse backgrounds that exhibit similar characteristics through intentional work on their mindset and beliefs – Hey!, I married one. This highlights the universality of these principles and their relevance beyond the confines of a specific institution.

However, it’s also important to acknowledge that outliers exist. Not every Covenant University graduate may embody these principles, just as not every individual from outside Covenant may lack them. Personal experiences and circumstances vary, and each individual’s journey is unique.

To my fellow Covenant University graduates who may have lost their way, I offer a gentle reminder: remember who you are and whose you are. Your journey doesn’t end with graduation; it’s an ongoing process of growth and self-discovery. Embrace the principles instilled within you and continue to strive for excellence in all that you do.

Have a great day!
